Why do Giant Schnauzers give Giant Hugs?Adopt a Giant Schnauzer.Visit us at our next event!
We're Looking for a Few Good Homes!
We have a great need for good adoptive homes and those willing to foster Giant Schnauzers until a new home is found for this intelligent working breed of dog. The number of Giant Schnauzers needing new homes varies greatly from month to month, both in Southern California and around the country. We network with other Giant Schnauzer dog rescue groups to help balance the load.

Our Foster Program
Fostering allows us to evaluate a new Giant Schnauzer's training needs and health issues when it comes into dog rescue. We learn about the dog's personality, what kind of doggy manners he may or may not have, and how he reacts to men, women, children, other dogs, cats, and other small animals (such as bunnies, guinea pigs, birds, etc.). Foster homes provide initial training in obedience, if necessary. We find that most dogs are house trained to some degree. Sometimes, however, they need a brief reminder course and a foster family usually accomplishes this task quickly. If the foster family has a dog of their own, the rescue dog often learns appropriate new behavior quickly from the resident dog.

Fostering also gives us time to have the dog evaluated by our Veterinarian. All of our Giant Schnauzer dogs are spayed/neutered before placement, if they weren't already. They are checked for heartworm and other problems common to dogs who may not have received consistent medical treatment. Some medical conditions, such as ear problems or allergies, are dealt with immediately to improve the dog's well-being. Any long term medical needs are diagnosed so that they may be considered during placement. All inoculations required by law are administered.

All of our dogs are micro-chipped before they leave our program. Southern California Giant Schnauzer Rescue (SCGSR) remains listed as the secondary notification party, assuring that SCGSR will be notified and can provide appropriate care for the dog should the owner not respond if the dog is recovered.

Come Volunteer with Us!
Volunteers are always welcome to help with shelter calls, home visits, follow-up visits, information drop-offs, transportation and public education.
